WOMAN

I’m going to have a child!

(At this news, the expression drains from MAN’s face.)

Isn’t that wonderful?!

(pause; WOMAN pleads and reaches for MAN’s hand.)

Please say you’re happy.

MAN

How can I be happy to bring children into this world?  They will have no future with me as a father.  I am worthless.  I have no money or prospects.  I’ve got nothing to offer a child… or a woman.

WOMAN

But why offer anything?  This isn’t a bargain.  It’s enough that we love each other.  (pasue; MAN doesn’t respond.  He is distant and melancholy)  Tell me you agree with me.  Say you’re glad.

(pleading) Say something.

(MAN is quiet for a moment, then…)

MAN

Moving…

Life means moving.

Pushing forward…  and moving on.

I’m a wastrel — nothing more than a dead-end...

Frozen…

I feel frozen…

No future to offer.

My life’s

Going nowhere

All too fast…

You should have more than that.

WOMAN

But you are more than that… my love.

Your kiss, your touch are more than that.

Your strength...much more than that…my love.

(pleading)  See yourself in me.

Why must I need more than that, my heart?

Loving you is living!

That is what you’re giving.

I don’t want more than that.

MAN

Moving…

WOMAN

You’re moving.

I’m moving.

MAN

I’m not moving.

WOMAN

We’re moving out and moving on… my love.

MAN

I have no right to take a wife.

WOMAN

The shadows of the past will soon be gone.

MAN

Somehow,

I need something

To give your life meaning.

WOMAN

Trust me!

MAN

Trust me,

I’ve no future

For a child.

WOMAN

Your child…

Our child.

MAN

Your words are moving, though.

I wish I had the hope you do.
